(“I had a girlfriend, and she was working for this big firm, and I didn’t like the way that she had to spend so much of her time working. The riff seemed to fit the words, Matthew and Son. There was a bit of social comment there about people being slaves to other people”.)

("Mona Bone Jakon" is another name for my "penis". It's the name I give it. It's not some sort of secret vocabulary, it's just something I made up.

I’d already done that drawing of the garbage can with the drop coming out of the top. When I thought of it in relation to the album title, it sort of made sense, so I made it the album cover.)

("Tillerman" is a guy who tills the land, a sort of peasant. This has

a direct connection with the drawing on the cover.

I loved that drawing so much, it brings back many elements of the song, that I thought that the title was perfect to go along with the album.)

(When I was 19—20 I used to sing and play “Sitting” for people on my roommate’s acoustic guitar. I’d get comically overblown at the screaming parts, as was consistent with the over-the-top silly person I was at the time. Later in life I made records where the influence of Cat Stevens' intimate depth was more apparent, but those early performances of “Sitting” were a blueprint for the beginning of the road which took me there.)

(During a flight from Japan I had with me a Buddah statuette and a chocolate box. I suddenly realised they were the only possessions I had with me at the time. And if I had died or anything had happened, there would have been the Buddah and the box.

I was trying to find a significance and I realised that that was the significance — that was all that needed to be known. If you study something for long enough you can be enlightened by it. Just as the boy found enlightenment from a chocolate box, if you screw up a piece of paper, you’ll find all of life in that piece of paper without having to move.)

Texte voller Sinnsuche, Liebeskummer

Music is a lady that I still love
'Cause she gives me the air that I breathe

Music is a lady that I still need
'Cause she brings me the food that I eat

("Home In The Sky"/ Buddha And The Chocolate Box 1974)

"Music is a lady that I still love

because she gives me the air that I breathe.

We need all sorts of nourishment.

And music satisfies and nourishes the hunger within ourselves

for connection and harmony."
